Wellness – often spoken and is becoming a trending topic in the last few years. Wellness is a balanced state of external health and not only. People are becoming aware that even though we go to the gym or able to do extreme yoga poses as the result of the daily yoga practice, there is still something off.
“I am doing healthy and fine. I am on a healthy diet. I read book and talk with like-minded people. I exercise and do yoga every day. I have a job or business runs well. I am in a relationship. I often travel and can even afford to spend a little extra to stay in a luxurious accommodation. I have been attending yoga retreats here and there. But why do I feel this feeling of discontentment? Something off while I am doing fine …
Well, to start with, human is not only built out of one physical-material dimension. There are 6 more dimensions that build and complete a human being. Each dimensions have different texture and senses. Which means certain formula needed to re-align in case of imbalance.
When you feel something is off from the life, it could be the sign that you are actually being asked to meet yourself deeper. As we grow older in age where we have experienced all kind of interactions energetically, physically, emotionally that enrich our soul – that at the same time transform us towards the better and maturity – we also create a brand-new avenue to walk on. We tend to look for the balance to align ourselves with harmony, because it is the source of our fulfilment. However, balance cannot be attained by just working on one dimension of human being but also the other six.
What Are They?
Physical Dimension
Variety of health behaviors. Be grateful that you are blessed with a complete – physical body. The body that is healthy plays important role for us to enjoy life more comfortable. To protect the body from harm and injuries is the responsibility that we carry. Other than that, what else can be done is to be aware of what we consume. Nutritious foods and a balanced diet also can be the source of healing to repair the damage of the inside. Going to the Spa as well as having a massage can benefit to well-being Such a combination of good rest, stretching, gym work out, doing ancient practice of yoga could strengthen the health and extending the life of the physical body.
Emotional & Mental Dimension
There are so many emotions that human ever feel yet having struggle to healthily express it. Emotional wellness is someone possessing the ability to feel and to express all sort of emotions within a connection in a positive and healthy way which is not all the time in a good – happy state. The emotion is strongly related with the feeling of being accepted and self – esteem. Stress, toxic relationship, pessimist thoughts could add up to unbalanced emotional wellness. As you know the cause, now you could help yourself out. If it is needed – and it is actually – have an honest conversation. Say what you truly feel. Have a sense of control over your reactions. It is not a healthy habit to suppress the emotion as it could lead to a worse problem – depression. Another thing that people often do with their emotion is that – they force it! Within a romantic relationship for example, love should not flow only from one individual while the other take the advantage of being loved by being playful, immature, demanding and ignorant. That is why, healthy emotion supported with healthy mental state contribute to a state of being realistic rather than blindfolded or manipulated by emotions.
If one wants to work on their emotional dimension, having the ability to acknowledge the feeling is a great starter. Thoughts trigger emotions. If it is the case, you should probably too have a mindful practice to control the thoughts. Being honest with yourselves about every emotion that you have within a connection or relationship. Is this emotion truly expressing myself or is it expressing, my fears? Fear of being abandoned and lonely so that I am in this relationship even though i know I force my emotions.
Intellectual Dimension
Intellectual often associated with knowledge and brain activity. Just like the physical body, our brain too need exercise to boost our intelligence. The mind is filled with ideas and creativity, however if we do not help ourselves this could bring nothing in the outcome of problem solving or learning. Writing can help to speak the ideas. It is a good activity for those who tend to have a busy- active mind. Encourage yourself to read more books, learn a new skill, take a class or participating in a workshop to enrich the intellectual dimension.
Social Dimension
Besides as an individual we are also a global citizen. There is something called individual goal and collective goal. In this part, you are interacting with others within a community, a team or even a broader scale in a global collective where your personal role here brings contribution to the group. Everyone’s role in the group is equally important. In this dimension, it is necessary to create a healthy-positive social environment. You may need to learn a communication skill where you can deliver your ideas. To actively get involved in any discussion or social event. To help to build a stronger community with your skills and talent.
Environmental Dimension
It’s the awareness of the environment we are living in. Knowing how our daily habits can impact the health of the environment. The truth is that human is the micro version of the planet or the universe itself. Every element that builds a planet is also build a human body. That is why everything is strongly affecting each other. To bring wellness into an environmental dimension, we need to examine our daily habits. Choosing a healthy living for example by reducing the used of plastic, minimize chemical use, reuse or recycle, conserve water and other resources are simple actions that could help the planet. A healthy environment, healthy population.
Occupational Dimension
The dimension of your professional life and your attitude towards your occupation. Let’s say, you feel happy when you are doing something that you really like. The happiness of working from heart motivates you to attain achievement in your career. How satisfying is it when you are working in a right environment according to your gift, skill and talent that are your life’s purpose. If one wants to feel well in this dimension, having a skill development is important. Feel free to make more working experiences, changing occupations, knowing what you are good at, and allow yourself to thrive in this dimension.
Spiritual Dimension
The external state of being is the reflection of the internal state of being. In this dimension, every individual tends to work on their inner peace by nourishing the soul. It is the journey of exploration a dimension beyond body and mind that helps to sets up the life journey steadier and clearer. It is a dimension where we are drawn to whenever we need of a guidance in life. Spiritual wellness involves us to go deeper in our belief, faith and wisdom that we gather from various soul – enriching events such as: practice gratitude, meditation, ceremony and praying, grieving, falling in love, celebrating birth, and still many more.
I would say that the feeling of contentment in life would come from a balanced work and attention shared to each dimension. At least now we know that it is not just the matter of body, mind and spirit but also how we are connected with other, connected with the environment and our occupation generate the feeling of satisfaction and let the spirituality be the compass.
