Traditionaly , people in Bali live in a Balinese house compound that consits of a family temple
( pamerajan) , bale ( building ) at every direction of the compund , a kitchen , a courtyard , and at some complex house compound we may find , a Lumbung ( granary ) .
The house compound is zoning using the concept of Tri Mandala ( 3 zoning system according to Balinese : nista mandala , madya mandala , and utama mandala ) .
- Part of Nista Mandala is the area at the entrance : the gate
- Part of Madya Mandala where the courtyard, the Bale , and the kitchen are. Human realm.
- Part of Utama Mandala where the family temple is . The area that is used for ceremony and praying . Considered as the most sacred place in the compound.
Each building in a house compound is build using certain measurement of Asta Kosala Kosali . In order to live peacefuly away from any negativity and bad fortunes , the macrocosmic energy and microcosmic energy has to be flown harmoniously in the same circle. The undagi ( Balinese Architect ) will then measure the person’s fist , arms , feet , etc to be used to build the house. The owner has to feel connected with the building . To avoid the feeling of – too big – at certain space in the house which can lead to any feeling of unconvenient.
